New website launch for migrant workers

On Friday 16th July a packed house, including local dignitaries and Southampton Central MP, Mr Alan Whitehead, celebrated the launch of Southampton City Councils new website aimed at people considering moving to the city. The event hosted by Nimbus and local community charity CLEAR was attended by over 100 people from the multicultural community.

The original New Communities website, though potentially a useful information tool for new arrivals from outside the UK, suffered from low numbers of visitors despite best efforts to develop and market the website. However, the involvement of Nimbus proved to be a game changer. Following a consultation period with a wider variety of stakeholders to scope requirements Nimbus was able to develop a unique and user friendly design. An icon based menu system made access easy for people with low literacy skills or whose first language is not English. The multi-lingual options also help find information in the native tongue and the addition of a blog page has engaged the community in telling their own stories of life in a new country.

Gavin Barker, Head of Migration Impact with the Council said “They transformed the site, simplified the navigation and optimised its search ranking so that a user not only found the website, but the relevant section of the site depending on what information they were looking for. As a result, numbers of unique visitors have rocketed to ten times the average monthly visitor rate we had the year before.”
